Emergency Medicine
Learning & Resource Center
Receives Land for Education Facility

ORLANDO, FL -- October
31, 2006
--
The Orlando City Council recently approved the sale of four acres of
property to the Emergency Medicine Learning & Resource Center
(EMLRC) to build the Emergency Medicine Learning & Resource
Center (EMLRC). The EMLRC, which will be located in the new
200-acre Southport mixed-use complex, will serve as an
international education facility for emergency care personnel
and first responders, including doctors, nurses, paramedics,
emergency medical technicians, police and firefighters. The
35,000 square-foot building will also house the Florida College
of Emergency Physicians and
the Orange County EMS Office of the
Medical Director.
The EMLRC will provide interactive courses with hands-on
learning environment, including a simulated emergency room,
ambulance, and high-tech simulators to train emergency first
responders to react to situations ranging from heart attacks to
bioterrorism events. The center will also conduct research in
the areas of disaster management, emergency medicine and public
health. The EMLRC’s Southport location will contribute to
Central Florida’s planned medical cluster, which will include
the University of Central Florida medical school, the Burnham
Institute for Medical Research, and the proposed Veteran’s
Administration hospital.
“We are very excited about the land purchase approval, because
it is the culmination of seven years of hard work,” stated Dr.
Richard Slevinski, president of EMLRC. “The EMLRC will not only
provide vital training and support for all members of the
emergency personnel team, but will serve to complement the high
quality of healthcare available to Central Florida residents.”
With the land secured, the EMLRC is focusing its efforts on
fundraising with the goal of breaking ground by the end of the
year and completing construction in 18 months. The center is
expected to cost $6 million, and has raised nearly $3 million to
date.
