EMLRC’s
Mobile Simulation Lab Wins State of
Florida's EMS for Children (EMSC) Award
ORLANDO, FL. – The
Emergency Medicine Learning and Resource Center has been informed
that the Mobile
Simulation Lab has been awarded the
Florida Department
of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services’ EMS for
Children Award 2006 for outstanding
contribution in pediatric
education through the “Winter Park School Nursing Project” pioneered
in January 2006. The Mobile Simulation Lab
brought “hands-on” education to a group of school nurses from the
Winter Park Health Foundation School Nursing
Initiative (SNI) to Glenridge Middle School on January 3, 2006.
The education was made possible by a grant provided by Winter Park
Health Foundation Trustee Charles Pierce. School nurse education is
a project that the EMLRC is pioneering to increase awareness of
cardiac, respiratory, choking, and allergic reactions in students.
The award will be presented at a ceremony honoring awards recipients
in July in Orlando. The Mobile Simulation Lab was in Ocala last week
with the Marion County EMS Alliance for National EMS Week. This
week, May 22-25th, Monday-Thursday, the SimLab will be
with The Villages Fire Rescue at 1231 Bonita Blvd. in The Villages
bringing education to The Villages Fire Rescue, Lake/Sumter EMS,
Marion County Fire Rescue, and Lifeflight. Also noteworthy, Governor
Jeb Bush proclaimed last Wednesday, May 17, 2006 Emergency
Medical Services for Children Day.
The EMS for Children (EMSC) award is one of several awards given
out each year by the State of Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical
Services to recognize outstanding achievement in EMS. The EMS for
Children (EMSC) award specifically recognizes an individual or
organization that shows achievement in pediatric education,
understands the needs of the pediatric patient, has taken on a
leadership role in pediatric education within their community,
and/or has initiated projects to help improve emergency care for
children and their families. The EMLRC Mobile Simulation Lab
provided education to nurses from Aloma Elementary, Audubon Park
Elementary, Brookshire Elementary, Cheney Elementary, Glenridge
Middle, Killarney Elementary, Lake Sybelia Elementary, Lakemont
Elementary, Maitland Middle, North Learning Community, and Winter
Park High. Per request, Clinical Coordinator Karen Crowe focused the
sessions on asthma and respiratory emergencies, allergic reactions,
obstructed airway/chocking, head trauma, and Automatic External
Defibrillator (AED) education.
The Mobile Simulation Lab is a 45-foot motor coach complete with a
full ambulance bay and emergency department area to bring unlimited
real life scenarios to students. Education is conducted using
high-tech patient simulators, including SimBaby®, SimMan®, and
AirMan®. The EMLRC’s Mobile Simulation Lab is an important tool for
advancing emergency medicine training throughout the state of
Florida, including such first responders as EMTs, paramedics,
firefighters, emergency physicians and nurses, emergency management
administrators, and disaster preparedness and response
professionals. More information about the SimLab can be found on at:

The Mobile Simulation Lab is a program of the Emergency Medicine
Learning and Resource Center. The EMLRC is a
non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing
emergency medicine, disaster management, pre-hospital emergency care
and public health through the provision of educational and research
programs.
