Richard
Slevinski, MD, FACEP was named
Richard Ferneau EMS Medical Director of the Year.
The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT)
has named Richard Slevinski, MD, FACEP, of Pace, Florida, as
its 2004 Richard Ferneau EMS Medical Director of the Year.
This award, which recognizes a medical director for his or her
leadership skills, dedication to improving the quality of emergency
medical care, and innovation in system development and clinical
care, is sponsored by Ferno-Washington Inc.
Slevinski received his award at a banquet in Atlanta on Oct. 23. The
banquet, which was sponsored by Moore Medical Corp., concluded the
NAEMT Annual Meeting and EMS EXPO 2004.
Slevinski is an emergency physician at Sacred Heart Hospital in
Pensacola and has been the EMS medical director for the state of
Florida for the past 18 years. He developed the concept of EMS
medical direction in Florida and is active in the long-term planning
in the EMS office on a state level. Slevinski co-authored the 2010
plan, which helps identify the issues and problems related to the
development of a statewide EMS system. Slevinski is also the medical
director for Florida DMAT-1, which is the Florida disaster medical
assistance team.
In her nomination letter, Beth Brunner, chief executive officer of
the Emergency Medicine Learning and Resource Center, wrote,
“For nearly 20 years, Dr. Slevinski has served as the mentor,
supporter and advocate for EMS throughout the state of Florida. He
is known for his keen interest for individuals, first and foremost.
There is common knowledge throughout the state, and particularly
with the EMS constituency organizations and state EMS office, that
‘Dr. Rick’ is the common thread that keeps us all united.”
Slevinski graduated from the University of Florida medical school in
1975. He is a member of the board of directors of the Florida
chapter of the American Heart Association, where he serves as
chairman of the cardiac/stroke committee. He also wrote the first
law and training course allowing the use of automated external
defibrillators in Florida.
During the last 20 years, Slevinski has been actively involved with
the Florida Emergency Medicine Foundation and was
instrumental in the conception and planning for the Emergency
Medicine Learning and Resource Center (EMLRC) which is located
in Orlando, Florida. He currently serves as President of EMLRC’s
Board of Directors.
The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT)
is a national association of EMTs and Paramedics that represents
paid and volunteer EMS workers worldwide. NAEMT’s goal is to serve
its members through educational programs, information services,
membership benefits, effective representation, and recognition of
the professionalism and dedication of the men and women who provide
prehospital medical care.
The Emergency Medicine
Learning & Resource Center (EMLRC) is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to promoting and advancing emergency
medicine, disaster management, prehospital emergency care and public
health through the provision of educational and research programs.
