Florida Emergency Medicine Foundation/Emergency Medicine Learning & Resource Center awarded $460,000 Grant to expand Emergency Medicine Education/Training

Orlando, FL -- April 14, 2004 -- The Florida Emergency Medicine Foundation (FEMF) was selected to receive a $460,000 grant from the State of Florida/Department of Health to develop a mobile simulation lab for broad based education and training of rural emergency medicine agency and hospital personnel.

The lab will be designed and built to provide the most optimal platform for high tech simulation training.....on wheels.

"We plan to travel across the state and eventually beyond to bring quality simulation based education and training to communities where access to this type of platform is not available" states John Todaro, Director of the FEMF / EMLRC.  The simulation lab is just one of the expanding programs provided by the Emergency Medicine Learning and Resource Center

The mobile lab will consist of patient simulators, computer networks, and real-life patient care areas.  Through a cooperative agreement with rural health care providers, the simulation lab will be mobilized with a primary instructor and adjunct faculty consisting of paramedics, EMTs, nurses and physicians.  “The simulation lab will provide opportunities to network with other educational institutions and to identify additional education and training offered through the EMLRC” stated Dr. David Seaberg, member of the EMLRC Board of Directors.

The simulation vehicle will be utilized in conjunction with other health care initiatives as well as for support and response to a mass casualty event.  Plans are to have the simulation lab built and classes underway by  Summer 2005.

The Emergency Medicine Learning & Resource Center (EMLRC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing emergency medicine, disaster management, prehospital emergency care and public health through the provision of educational and research programs.
